The School of Humanities offers:
Modern education focusing on humanities: Bulgarian Language, Literature, History and Civilization, Philosophy, Geography, modern foreign languages, intensely studied in the course.

Education of some specific subjects: Ancient Myths and Folklore, Theories of Literature, Archaeology, Language Specificity, Archives, Knowledge of History Sources, History of Religions, Civilization, Tourism Studies, Eco tourism, etc.

Our students’ interests can be developed in the drama club, school newspaper, students’ band, reciting club, school radio, eco club, euro club, etc.

The activities of the eco club include: cleaning of the Blue Stones Natural Park, eco parade entitled “The city without my car”, project work Widening Europe, regular participation in the activities connected with the Day of the Earth on 22nd April, planting trees.

The activities of the euro club include: celebrating the Days of Europe, participation in the debate: “The Bulgarian government should have more effective politics concerning the young people”, participation in the conference “Are we the future of Europe or is Europe our future?, honorable guest F. Pshenichka from The Czech Republic.

Our school successfully cooperates with the Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv in exchange of experience in enhancing teachers’ qualifications and providing modern education of students.

 

Damyan Damyanov

The School of Humanities was founded on September 15, 1997. Mrs. Ekaterina Ivanova was appointed principal. The school started with two classes studying English intensely. A parents’ board was established two days later. The first issue of the school paper came out. The parents’ board and the teachers’ council agreed on school uniforms on March 1, 1998.

 

1998-1999 – the school has four classes.
The Patronal Festival led to a city literary competition entitled “The 21st century- century of humanities”. That same year Kamelia Ivanova won the second prize in the competition “My rights and obligations at school” organized by the Ministry of Education and the EC.

 

1999-2000 – Nadejda Zaharieva, the wife of Damyan Damyanov, was a special guest at the opening ceremony of the new school year. There are six classes. At the beginning of the new school year a new library was founded. Mrs. Zaharieva donated the library some of Damyan Damyanov’s volumes of poetry. That same year cooperation with the teachers and students of Namik Kemal Lisesi, the Republic of Turkey, was started.
In 2000 the patronal festival was started with a school drama club performance- a famous comedy by the Bulgarian playwright Dobri Voinikov. The 60th anniversary of Damyan Damyanov’s birth was commemorated in Sofia on January 18, 2000. Students from the school reciting club took part in it. On the following day the winners of the annually held competition were awarded. Every year the moto of the competition is different. It is taken from Damyan Damyanov’s verses. During that same school year, at the First National History Competition, our students Krassimira Kokalova and Yavor Ivanov were awarded for their paper “The first printing and publishing house in Sliven”.

 

2000-2001 – This was the first school year with three new classes, one of them studying German intensely. There were nine classes altogether. The teachers’ council organized a competition for a school crest. The idea of our student Konstantin Tsvetanov from the 10th grade was chosen. The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences donated 1088 books to the school library. During that same school year 6 issues of the school newspaper and a leaflet dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Damyan Damyanov’s birth came out. During that same school year our students our students took part in regional and national competitions and conferences. Borjana Jivkova won the second prize in “Beauty, Iovkov( a famous Bulgarian writer) and the 21st century”, Ralitza Ivanova won the first prize in “We and the Space”, and others.

 

2001-2002 three new classes started the school year at the School of Humanities. Its 5th anniversary included the following events:
On January 17, 2002- a regional conference in history and philosophy entitled “National Spirit and European Consciousness- Freedom and Responsibility” was held.
On January 18, 2002- a concert was performed on which the winners of the traditional annual literary competition were awarded. Thanks to the foundation bearing the name of the patron there were participants from all over the country. During that same school year our students our students took part in regional and national competitions and conferences. Peter Hlebarov and Maria Andonova with their paper “Benefactors, Contributors and Donations to the Zora Community Cultural Centre” took the second prize at the National History Competition under the patronage of the first lady. Inna Nikolova received the first prize in the essay competition on the Days of Europe in Sliven.
On the Day of the Slavonic Letters and Culture, on May 24, the school had its first graduates.

 

2002-2003 - 51 new students came to our school; recognized university professors gave lectures to our students. Some of our students took the first prizes in the National Literary Competition. The drama club performed a famous comedy by a distinguished Bulgarian playwright. The students from the first German classes with the help of their German teacher Nina Nedelcheva took part in the project “The Bavaria Woods” organized by the Ministry of Education and the German Embassy in Bulgaria. The students shot “The Tale and the Forest”- a twenty- minute film on their own script and they were awarded. During that same school year our students our students took part in regional and national competitions and conferences. Kamelia Chavdarova was awarded in the competition dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the liberation of the town of Sliven.
Juliana Yakimova was awarded in the National Literary Competition “Petya Dubarova”.
Ivan Landjev and Keti Petrova were awarded in the competition “Agression, Protest, Education”.
Galen Damyanov was awarded in the National Essay Competition Botev’s Prayer for Bulgaria.

 

2003-2004 – There were 12 classes. There was a concert and a school drama club performance of “Cabinet Minister's Wife” by Branislav Nusic to celebrate the patronal festival. On 22 March a school sports day was organized. There were different competitions and games.
Zornitza Stoilova won the first prize in the competition “My town and I”.
Carlos Contrera won the third prize in the competition “My town and I”, and the third prize in the international competition “Europe at school”.
Kalin Temelkov was awarded in the national competition “Petya Dubarova”.
Donka Paneva took the third prize in the national literary competition “Soul between Good and Evil”.
Diliana Koleva and Donka Paneva were participants in the National Philosophy Olympiad, took respectively the 11th and 12th place among 40 participants altogether.

 

 

2004-2005 – Three new classes started the new school year. The total number of classes was 13. At the beginning of the school year we started the initiative connected with realizing our Bulgarian identity- lessons about Bulgaria in different schools. In December 2004 there was a workshop between the teachers of the School of Humanities and Namik Kemal Lisesi, the republic of Turkey, to exchange, improve qualifications and skills, and discuss lesson planning.
Donka Paneva and Ivan Landjev took part in the essay competition in English organized by UNESCO for the Intenational Day of Philosophy. Donka’s essay was included in the UNESCO collection of the best philosophical essays (see the essay) >>>
Donka Paneva and Ivan Landjev took respectively the 4th and 9th places among 40 participants in the 17th National Philosophy Olympiad. As a result they both were chosen to represent Bulgaria in the International Philosophy Olympiad in Warsaw, Poland.
Mrs. Margarita Markova, the teacher of philosophy, was awarded to attend the Olympiad in Poland with the students.
Ivan Landjev took the first prize in the essay competition “To Bridge the Spirit”, organized by Prosveta Publishing House.
Carlos Contrera took the first prize for a short story in the competition “Europe at School”; special prize of the chairperson of the jury Anton Donchev (a famous Bulgarian writer) in the ministry of Education essay competition “Development without national culture is like a body without a soul”; first prize for short story in the competition “Cities against drugs”; first prize in the National Philosophy Conference in the city of Burgas.
Galen Damyanov won the third prize in the essay competition “Both Harp and Sward”; second prize in the essay competition “The Soul of a Spring”.
Stoyan Stoyanov took the second prize in the antimilitary Competition of the Municipality of Sliven.
Atanaska Georgieva took the first prize in the literary competition “God is Love” with her essay.
Diana Jordjeva took the second prize for her poem in the sixth national competition “Southern Suns”.
Desislava Gatcheva and Ivelina Radeva took respectively the second and third prize in the literary competition “God is Love”.
Denitza Jordanova took the first prize in the national literary competition dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. The school euro club took the third prize in “Be a European” initiative connected with the opening of a Municipality site for Euro integration.

 

Our Students' Writings

2005-2006 – On the 15th of October 2007 the School of Humanities “D. Damyanov” welcomed its alumni. For the tenth time the school bell marked the beginning of the school year.
     In the tenth year of the creation of the School of Humanities, the teachers’ collective continued to grow. At the beginning of September new teachers were employed: Mrs. Snezhana Ilcheva ,a teacher of Bulgarian language and Literature, Ms. Mariana Boneva and Mrs. Katya Atanasova - English Language, Mrs. Rumiana Takova - German language and Mrs. Gergana dimitrova - Informatics.
    The fact that the School of Humanities strengthened its position  as one of the most desired schools on the territory of the town of Sliven is joyous. During the present school year, 87 new students, divided into 4 classes, were admitted. Apart from the already confirmed classes of Bulgarian and Literature with intensive education of English language and History and civilization with intensive education of English, classes of Geography with intensive education of German language and History and civilization after graduation of primary school were formed for the first time. During the 2006-2007 school year 302 students, allocated in 13 classes, were taught.
    The present school year was significant for the whole collective of School of Humanities “D. Damyanov”. In 2007, ten years from the foundation of the high-school were completed. Ten years of incessant work for confirmation of the youngest high-school in the region of Sliven as a leading educational institution gave us self-confidence as well as obligation to meet our patronal festival with dignity.
     The tenth anniversary was marked with a number of activities:

  1. In the autumn of 2006, a National Literature Competition under the heading of “You seem to have everything but not a dream” was organized. Laureates were awarded on the 18th of January 2007 in “May” Hall.
  2. On the 1st of February the theatrical group of the School of Humanities, with leader the actress Lidia Gyaurova, presented the musical “I will make you fall in love”. The text is by Nedyalko Yordanov and the music by Haigashot Agasian.
  3. The culmination of the jubilee celebrations was the solemn concert, held on the 11th of May 2007 in the Drama Theatre “Stefan Kirov
According to a decision made by the Pedagogic Council in connection with the tenth anniversary of the school, and for special contribution in approval of school’s authority, Maria Andonova, Petar Hlebarov and Konstantin Petrov, graduates of 2003, as well as Donka Paneva and Ivan Landzhev, graduates of 2005, and Karlos Kontrera, a graduate of 2006, were honoured jubilee charters.
During the present school year the collective of the School of Humanities continued the tradition of merited presentation in different competitions and conferences.
  1. On the 10th of October 2006 students from the School of Humanities took part in a Literature duel, held in the chamber hall of Drama Theatre “Stefan Kirov”
-     On the 26th of October 2006 the teachers’ collective of the School of Humanities participated in the unveiling of a piece of plastic arts by Damian Damyanov in front of the Municipality Sliven.
On the 31st of October 2006 a restoration of a lawsuit, which reproduced a realistic penal trial, was made
  1. In October 2006, Vyara Georgieva form 12th grade won first prize for an essay in the competition “I and my town”. Vyara Georgieva is a winner in the 6th National competition “God is love”
  2. On the 31st of November 2006 students from the School of Humanities started a campaign for delivering of the longest epistle, organized by the Centre for struggle against drug addicts.
  3. In March 2007 the teachers M. Markova, K. Tahchieva, M. Milanova, R. Rasheva, and V. Milkov took part in the Conference “The school – a desired territory”
  4. Vyara Georgieva and Zahari Zahariev from 11th grade presented themselves excellently in the National conference of philosophy “Man. World.” in Burgas, 2007.Both of them fittingly defended the approved over the years strong presence of the graduates of the School of Humanities in the National Olympiad of philosophy – Pravec 2007
  5. The alumni of the School of Humanities presented themselves exceptionally well in the Olympiad of Bulgarian language and Literature. Nedelina Kirilova and Vyara Georgieva participated in the 26th National Olympiad of Bulgarian Language and Literature, which was held in the town of Shumen on the 13th of May 2007.
  6. Desislava Apostolova from 10th grade won first prize in the National competition of food industry in a national competition of science, technique and technology in Kranevo
We also have to add to the numerous successes of our students the achievements in the sphere of arts and sports
In 2007 the drama group of the School of Humanities performed the musical “I will make you fall in love” on the second Youth theatrical festival of laughter “Shakespeare in the 21st century” (Pazardzhik 2nd-6th of April 2007).On the third Youth theatrical holidays, held on 29th of April 2007 in Burgas, the drama group of the School of Humanities won the prize for best staging.
The sport manifestations of the students from the School of Humanities also increased. In 2007, second prize in the Municipal championship of volleyball for girls was won.
Vocal Instrumental Band “Monologue” also strengthened its presence in the musical activities in the town of Sliven. In connection with the tenth anniversary of the School of Humanities, Denica Yordanova from 10th grade composed the music and wrote the lyrics of “Song of the School”, which was performed for the first time at the Solemn concert.
In 2007 the Euro club, with leader Ms. R. Rasheva, continued its activity. Its participants took part in the enterprise for Days of Europe (7th-11th of May)
The work of the Eco club, with leader Mrs. S. Stoycheva, was also beneficial and successful. Different activities connected with the preservation of the environment were organized.
The collaboration with our partners from the University of Plovdiv and “Namuk Kemal Lesisi”, the town of Tekirdag, is of special importance to the collective of the School of Humanities. From 16th till 20th of January 2007 teachers from Istambul, Tekirdag and Izmit, Republic of Turkey, visited the School of Humanities. They attended classes for experience exchange. In April teachers from the University of Plovdiv were guests at the School of Humanities. Reader Maria Shniter, Reader Zhivko Ivanov and Svetla Cherpokova implemented lessons with students from 9th to 12th grade.
On the 9th of May, for a second consecutive year in the School of Humanities, was organized. a Day of students’ self-government
An important moment in the process of confirmation of the School of Humanities and the enhancement of the quality of the Educational Instructive Work is the school’s joining to the Cambridge School Association on the 23rd of May 2007.
On Day of Slavonic writing and culture’s eve, the Pedagogic Council elected a new flag group – standard-bearer Dimitar Dimitrov from 11th grade and assistants Valentina Ivanova from 11 a  and Yordanka Mihova from 11 b classes.
On the 24th of May 2007, another banch of graduates from the School of Humanities was forwarded . Vyara Georgiva from 12 a class finished school with distinction.
On the holiday of Slavonic writing and culture, Mrs. Katya Tahchieva was honoured with the award “Argira Zhechkova”
